As Kettlebells are becoming wildly popular, there is a difference in Tennessee Kettlebell Boot Camp from “gyms” that teach and have kettlebells in their facilities. The difference is that we strive to teach you the best technique to achive optimal performance in your sport or just simply in your everyday movement. This IS the RKC system. At Tennessee Kettlebell your instructors are certified by Pavel Tsatsouline, Chief RKC Instructor. Pavel is accredited with bringing kettlebells to the United States. Pavel Tsatsouline, Master of Sports, is a former physical training instructor for the Soviet Special Forces, currently a subject matter expert to the U.S. Marine Corps, the National Nuclear Security Administration/U.S. Department of Energy, and the US Secret Service. In the words of one of the most respected names in the strength world Dr. Randall Strossen, “…Pavel Tsatsouline will always reign as the modern king of kettlebells since it was he who popularized them to the point where you could almost found a country filled with his converts…” No matter how you trace kettlebells being used in your community, you can probably trace its origin back to Pavel and the RKC. I will not name specifically the programs, franchises and certifications that have broken off from Pavel and the RKC, but more than likely if you have worked with kettlebells outside of the RKC you are familiar with these organizations.

Competition is healthly and I am not dismissing our competitors but do wish to explain some differences. In the RKC we do not practice “random act of fitness” just to give you a good workout. We believe not that practice makes perfect, but perfect practice makes perfect. We teach QUALITY over quantity. We will not stack fitness over a dysfunctional movement pattern. We will fix the movement patterns through fundmental exercies and strength building techniques. Our manner in teaching proper technique for using kettlebells is of upmost importance to our system. We teach safety over mindless repetions and over zealous unimportant feats of strength.

Now that you understand the RKC focus on technique, safety and movement, WHY does it all matter? If I am getting my heart pumping and moving my butt that’s better than the alternative, right? While it is better than doing nothing at all and it is important to stimulate your heart rate, it is most important that you do practice exercise in effective ways. First of all, by practicing effective I mean understanding its purpose. There are so many people out there that exercise for the wrong reasons, such as to get skinny, build bigger biceps, loose weight, the list goes on and on. I would like to challenge people to think of exercise as a form or health, not to stimulate your vanity. While a by prodcut of exercise may be fat loss and getting stronger, it should not be your sole purpose. If this is the case then you are missing the mark! Exercise should be used as a way to promote your overall health. Just as you eat your vegetables (maybe you don’t, but go with me here) as a nutrient, you should also think of exercise as an essential nutrient. Secondly, by practicing effective exercise I am referring to learning how to maximize your heart rate and managing your levels of fatigue. I find the kettlebell as the most effective tool to practice cardio and strength conditioning all at once. Kettlebells will challenge you to move your body in proper alignment making you less injury prone. With age our movement patterns become rigid, inflexible and injury prone, training with Kettlebells will promote mobility, stability and strengh.
